About Fukujuen
Founded in 1790 during the Kansei era, Fukujuen is a long-established tea house in Kyoto with a rich history of over 230 years, dedicated exclusively to tea. The origins of its founding region, Kyoto-Yamashiro, date back to the Asuka period, even earlier than the Heian and Nara periods. Surrounded by lush nature and steeped in history, this area is home to numerous historic temples and has long been a centre for ascetic mountain practices, enveloped in a solemn atmosphere.
Located in Kamikoma, a key transportation hub that utilized the Kizugawa River for water transport, this area became a thriving center for tea merchants. Fukujuen has carried on the traditional tea-making skills passed down through generations, while also embracing new technologies to propose a modern tea lifestyle for the future.
